A Response to "The Trial of Separation"
I just stumbled upon a post that was written by Mr. Mladen Tosic, a final year doctoral candidate at the Centre of International Studies at the University of Cambridge. I was surprised by his views of the “Kosovo is Serbia” protests. This is an excerpt of that post:
The huge gathering was a “people’s parliament”, said Branko Kovacevic, chancellor of the university of Belgrade, when he addressed the enormous crowd of Serbs who came out in a peaceful protest yesterday. Yet today, the reports are all of the thugs who took advantage of a thinly spread police presence to create mayhem.
But this should not tar the event. To all of us who value free expression, liberty, responsible citizenship, democracy and freedom, it was a truly inspirational day and proof, if ever it was needed, that Serbia deserves to be treated as an equal in the European family.
With respect to Mr. Tosic, I don’t understand how “mayhem” and “responsible citizenship” can go together. I admit that torching an embassy can be regarded as “free expression”, but I fail to realize how can such a display of violence serve as a proof “that Serbia deserves to be treated as an equal in the European family.” Pardon my possible ignorance, but I don’t remember reading about torched embassies in EU countries.
